The Five Most Dangerous Words
The five words in each of the two phrases below, are all too common when it comes to health.
"Maybe it will go away." or "Maybe it will get better."
Almost everyone, at one time or another, has lived in denial and uttered one these two sayings in reference to an ache, pain or other health problem. Each and every day, many people experience painful warning signs where something is just not right with their body. Despite the warning, their solution is often to simply ignore or blow off the pain and stiffness, as temporary, thinking that it will just go away. Unfortunately, in today's society, we primarily think about our health problems this way and do not take action to correct the cause of the problem, enabling it to return over and over again. The reason for this is quite simple; as a society we have been convinced to chase symptoms, while ignoring the underlying cause that led to the symptom in the first place. Worse yet, we have also been led to believe that a pill, potion or ointment is all we need to do to get rid of those pesky little annoyances.
Maybe It Will Go Away.
You can not just mask a symptom and think you are cured. The health problem or underlying condition that is causing the symptoms is still present and needs to be addressed. Not correcting and alleviating the cause of the symptoms, only assures their periodic return. Symptoms often disappear and reappear, and new, seemingly irrelevant symptoms may soon accompany the initial symptoms. Until the decision is made to discover and find solutions for the cause of the problem, your true health will be impacted, and more importantly, the condition and pain will continue to progress. Most individuals find that the symptoms not only return, but occur more frequently and cause more pain with each episode. The bottom line is, denial never helps one bit!
Many of us chalk up the everyday aches and pains, along with associated joint stiffness, as simply aging. Nothing could be further from the truth. Aging may have setbacks, but does not guarantee a reduction in quality of life. The fact is, the better you take care of your body, the longer it will last. Longevity of life can be most influenced by making healthy choices and taking proactive steps toward leading a healthy lifestyle. Most would agree that it is better to prevent the problem from happening in the first place.
Here is an example that brings this proactive thought process to light.
Think about the pain associated with having a cavity. The pain felt from the cavity simply means that the problem has been developing silently over time and was not the result of forgetting to brush your teeth the night before. For this reason, dentists recommend we have dental check-ups; to be proactive and ensure that our teeth are strong, healthy and cavity free. Chiropractic doctors recommend a similar approach when it comes to spinal health. In fact, many chiropractors refer to this proactive approach as "spinal hygiene".
Nasty Cavity
SPINAL
INJURY
It only makes sense to have periodic spinal check-ups to ensure a properly aligned, moving and functioning spine. If neck and back pain do present themselves, heed the warning signs and take action. Rarely do misaligned or abnormal moving vertebrae correct themselves spontaneously and permanently. Do not treat them like the neglected cavity and let possible damage set in. Neglected back and neck problems will only continue to get worse if nothing is done. Most medical authorities agree that when treating patients with low back or neck pain, whenever possible, conservative care should be tried first before resorting to more radical steps; like surgery and intensive drug therapy.
When will you stop gambling with your spinal health and seize the opportunity to be proactive and quit chasing those pesky symptoms. Pain, or the lack of pain, is a terrible yardstick to use when measuring your overall health. In the end, you do not learn to live with pain; you will only learn to suffer! So, please pay attention to your body when it speaks to you, and never say, "Maybe it will go away", again.
