Chiropractic Terminology  |  R
Radiograph:  This is a picture produced on a sensitive film surface by a form of radiation such as X-rays.
Range of Motion:  This is a measurement of the extent to which a joint can go through all of its normal movements.
Rare Earth Screens: An x-ray-intensifying screen made of rare-earth elements.  These specialized screens enable lower radiation doses to be used while producing acceptable film quality.
Reasonable Fee: This fee is often referred to as usual and customary.  The usual and customary fee is the fee determined by insurance companies to be what is typically or usually charged for a service in a particular geographic area.  This was developed to prevent providers from charging outrageous prices for services, by determining acceptable fees based on local competition.  This also compensates for different operating costs in different parts of the country.
Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA):  This term is actually in the process of being updated and changed to the Dietary Reference Intake (RDI).   The new table will be a resource used to determine the dietary intake necessary to be sufficient to meet the minimum nutritional needs of most healthy individuals.
Reflex:  This is an involuntary and nearly instantaneous movement in response to a stimulus.
Rehabilitative Care:  This is a type of chiropractic care that goes one step further than relief care.  The objective is to strengthen the spine and restore balance, mobility and function.
Reimbursement:  The payment for services provided up to any limit specified in an insurance policy.
Relaxation Techniques: To effectively combat stress, we need to activate the body’s natural relaxation response.  You can do this by practicing relaxation techniques including deep breathing, visualization, meditation and yoga.  Finding ways to fit these activities into your life can help reduce everyday stress and boost your energy and mood.  They’ll also help you to stay calm in the face of life’s unexpected events.
Relief Care:  This pain based care is usually associated with providing immediate relief from some type of trauma, injury or other chief complaint.  Chiropractic can provide immediate effective pain based solutions to your everyday lumps, bumps and bruises.  After the pain is gone you can then decide if you want to feel even better and continue on with wellness care.
Repetitions or "Reps":  It is the number of times you do the same movement in an excercise set.  A perfect example would be if you perform three groups of twenty push ups; every push up is one rep and every twenty push ups constitutes one set of push ups.  The number of repetitions you perform of a particular exercise will determine how it benefits your muscles.  Higher weight with lower repetitions will increase strength, whereas lower weight with higher number of repetitions will increase endurance.
Report of Findings: This is the part of your initial patient visit where the doctor will review your examination results with you.  This includes how long it will take to correct the problem, the treatment plan and goals, the prognosis and the expected out of pocket expense associated with receiving treatment.
Rheumatoid Arthritis:  This is a long-term disease that leads to inflammation of the joints and surrounding tissues.  It is an autoimmune disease, which means the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue.  Its cause is unknown and occurs at any age.  Women get this form of arthritis more often than men.
Routine:  This is also referred to as a program or workout.  It describes everything you do and perform during an exercise session.  This includes the exercises, reps and sets you do of strength training, aerobic conditioning and also describes the time spent and order in which you perform the exercises.
Ruptured Disc:  A disc that has herniated to the point of bursting and the pulposus material pushes through the outer lining of the disk.  This generally results in irritation to the spinal nerves and a significant amount of pain.
